CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini men's tennis team will get back in action at the ITA Midwest Regional begining Thursday. Seven Illini will head to Ann Arbor, Michigan to earn a chance to go to the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 6-19. Regionals run Oct. 16-20 and is hosted by Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Junior Jared Hiltzik was given the No. 1 seed overall in the singles draw. His first round matchup is against Lamar Remy of Wisconsin. The Illini have three other players seeded in the top-16 with No. 3 Tim Kopinski, No. 12 Aleks Vukic and No. 13 Aron Hiltzik. Kopinski will wait to see who qualifies to challenge him, while the freshman Vukic will take on Alex Knight of Michigan in the first round. Freshman Aron Hiltzik will square off against Urh Krajnc Domitar of Illinois State.
Brian Page and Ross Guignon are also slated to compete in the main draw. Page faces off against Josh Hagar of Notre Dame in the opening round, while Guignon faces Jakhongir Jalalov of Wisconsin.
In doubles, Tim Kopinski and Jared Hiltzik received the No. 4 seed and will face Horoz/Zieba of Northwestern to open the tournament. Also competing in doubles is Aron Hiltzik and Toshiki Matsuya, as the No. 16 seed. The freshmen duo will face Crocker/Gardiner of Michigan. Vukic and Brian Page are unseeded in the doubles draw and will face off against Appanervand/Oliviera of Illinois State in the first round.
Last but certainly not least, Matsuya will be the first Illini to see action in Michigan as he squares up against Louis Theodor Thursday morning in the singles qualifying draw.
