#5 Illinois Falls to #1 Oklahoma State, 19-15

STILLWATER, Okla. - The fifth-ranked University of Illinois gave No. 1 Oklahoma State everything they could handle today, however the Illini came up short, losing 19-15 in the semifinals of the NWCA National Duals in Stillwater, Okla. The Illini will compete against Iowa in the consolation finals at 6 p.m. tonight.
The match began with the Illini taking a quick 3-0 lead, behind a 7-1 decision of fifth-ranked Jesse Delgado over Tyler Dorrell at 125 pounds. With the win, Delgado recorded his 27th career victory and pushed the Illini up 3-0. The Illini then dropped the next three bouts with No. 1 Jordan Olivier defeating No. 4 B.J. Futrell in a 15-1 major decision to end Futrell's 12 match winning streak. Daryl Thomas was one of two Orange and Blue to lose their bout by a single point as Thomas lost 7-6 to No. 13 Joshua Kindig. At 149, No. 17 Eric Terrazas lost his bout to No. 2 Jamal Parks with an 8-4 decision to put the Cowboys up 10-3.
The Illini got back on the scoreboard with a win at 157 with Jackson Morse's 6-2 victory over No. 16 Albert White. The win for the Alto, Mich., native was the biggest of his career and the second time this season he's moved past a ranked opponent. At 165, Conrad Polz recorded his 18th victory of the season as he defeated Dallas Bailey 12-5. With the two victories, the Illini were only behind one, 10-9.
No. 11 Jordan Blanton lost his bout to No. 3 Chris Perry in a 6-3 decision to push the team score to 13-9 for the Cowboys. However, Tony Dallago posted one of the biggest victories in his career when he pinned No. 20 Chris McNeil to give the Illini six points and put the Orange and Blue up 15-13 with three bouts remaining.
The last two bouts of the match were extremely close with Blake Rosholt of Oklahoma State moving past No. 16 Mario Gonzalez in a 8-6 sudden victory win to put the Cowboys on top 16-15, making the deciding match at heavyweight. Pat Walker took on freshman Austin Marsden in the final bout of the match. After a scoreless first period, Marsden recorded an escape to go up 1-0 in the second before Walker tied the match 1-1 in the third after scoring an escape. In overtime, the Cowboy recorded the only takedown of the match with 16 seconds left and Walker notched an escape with the final seconds remaining. With the win, Oklahoma State took the match 19-15 to advance to the championship match versus Minnesota tonight at 6 p.m.
The Illini will have a week off before traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Big Ten Championships on March 3-4.
