MAYGUEZ, Puerto Rico - Illini senior-to-be Tyler Mizoguchi captured gold on parallel bars and claimed two additional medals as the U.S. Men's Team took second place in the 2011 Puerto Rico Cup, July 8-10 in Mayguez, Puerto Rico.
Mizoguchi, reigning NCAA parallel bar champion, earned a 15.225 to clinch his gold medal and continued his success with a 14.050 on pommel horse, earning the bronze medal in that event. The All-American excelled all weekend, just missing the podium for fourth and fifth times with a fourth-place finish on rings (15.050) and a sixth-place finish in the all-around (86.450).
The U.S. team earned the silver medal with a score of 348.800, finishing just behind gold medal-winning Puerto Rico (350.000). Illini head coach Justin Spring and Grigor Chalikyan coached the six-man squad, which included Mizoguchi, Dylan Akers, Adrian de los Angeles, Andrew Elkind, Sam Mikulak and Brandon Wynn.
