Quick Hits
• Highest Finish in School History: In her first season as interim head coach, Kim Landrus led Illinois to its highest national ranking in school history, as the Illini wrapped up the year ranked No. 11 following their second-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships. The top-12 final rankings were based on team score at nationals, and the Orange and Blue scored a 195.100 in their semifinal, just in front of Kent State's 195.000 from the second session. Illinois ended the season in the top 25 for the sixth year in a row while its previous top finish came in 2009 when the Illini made their first NCAA appearance and placed 12th in the country.

• Six Illini All-Americans: Heading into the NCAA Championships, Illinois gymnasts had earned five All-America honors in school history. The Illini more than doubled the record books by racking up six All-America accolades during the afternoon semifinal session at the Wolstein Center, giving the UI program 11 total All-Americans. Senior Melissa Fernandez was responsible for half the honors, leading the way with a pair of first-team All-America honors on beam and in the all-around along with a second-team nod on floor. Senior Allison Buckley and sophomore Alina Weinstein were also second-team All-Americans on floor while junior Kelsey Joannides garnered the distinction on vault for placing among the top eight in the session.

• Firsts by Fernandez: Senior Melissa Fernandez accomplished several firsts for the Illini in her final competition at the University of Illinois. The Eudora, Kan., native earned three All-America honors to become Illinois' first-ever multiple All-American at the NCAA Championships, placed fifth in the nation in the all-around to become the first Illini to earn an NCAA trophy in the all-around and reached the podium at event finals by tying for fifth on beam to notch the highest individual finish in school history. She is the first Illini to make the podium twice in her career at event finals and now owns the UI program's most career All-America accolades with four, just in front of teammate Allison Buckley's three.

• Illini, Buckley Rewrite the Record Books: During the 2011 season, Illinois set the school record for team score (196.975) and beam (49.375) while senior Allison Buckley cemented her name throughout the UI record book in her final season as an Orange and Blue gymnast. The Schaumburg, Ill., native broke the career event titles record with 62 crowns, eclipsed her own record-setting mark in the all-around with a 39.550 and equaled her own score of 9.950 on beam, which is tops in program history.

Buckley ended her career second all-time with three while Weinstein and Joannides nabbed the honor for the first time.

The Illini finished strong by recording a pair of totals over 49 on floor and vault but were forced to count a fall on beam. After sitting out the first rotation on a bye, Illinois kicked off the meet on bars with a 48.825 before turning in a 47.950 on beam. The Illini bounced back with a 49.150 on floor and ended the meet on vault, where they tallied their top event score with a 49.175, which matched a season high and the third-best mark in UI history.

Fresh Faces
Interim head coach Kim Landrus welcomed a talented recruiting class in her first season at the helm in freshmen Sarah Fiedler, Elizabeth McNabb and Amber See. Fiedler and See made an immediate impact in the Illini lineup, which lost eight routines following the graduation of all-arounders Nicole Cowart and Sarah Schmidt. Fiedler set a career high on bars at back-to-back meets with a 9.825 at the State of Illinois Classic and Big Ten Championships. She counted her bars score at 11 meets and twice turned in a season-best beam performance of 9.725 against Missouri and at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional. See became the second freshman to win the Big Ten title on vault in the last three years at Illinois, joining teammate Kelsey Joannides, who earned the honor in 2009. The Minnetonka, Minn., native won four vault titles and one floor crown, with career highs on vault (9.900) and floor (9.925), which tie the sixth-best mark in school history. She also made the beam lineup at the past seven meets and twice helped the squad break the school record on the event. See led the Illini on vault at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional with a 9.850, tying for fourth, and matched Buckley and Fernandez as the top Illini on beam with a 9.850 to help Illinois clinch its second-ever trip to nationals.

The Frederick, Md., native posted two victories at a meet for the first time in her career and topped her title total from the entire 2010 season (1). After only competing twice in the all-around a year ago, Joannides took part in the all-around at nine meets this season.
