Illini junior Tyler Mizoguchi wrapped up a solid weekend of competition with one gold and two silver medals at the inaugural Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival, March 25-26, in Calgary, Canada. Mizoguchi, competing for the U.S. National team, took gold on parallel bars (15.450) and secured silver medals on rings (14.700) and in the all-around (86.450).
The U.S. earned six individual event medals including two gold and four silver, while as a team, the squad took bronze with a two-day score of 255.850. Canada's "Red" (258.600) and "White" (258.450) teams placed first and second, respectively, followed by the U.S. and China (254.650). The competition used a 4-3-3 format in which each team consisted of four members with three athletes competing on each apparatus and all three scores counted.
Mizoguchi will be back in the Illinois lineup this weekend to compete at the 2011 Big Ten Championships, April 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. at Huff Hall.
