SEATTLE - In a day plagued by more delays, the eighth-seeded Illinois men's tennis team (6-3) finally got its shot at top-seeded Virginia (12-0) at close to midnight Pacific Time Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Despite late rallies by the Illini, the Cavaliers were able to hold on for the 4-1 win, as they continue their quest for an unprecedented fourth straight National Team Indoor title.
Illinois will face fifth-seeded Texas Sunday at 3:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. CT in a consolation match to finish out the tournament. Live scoring will be available HERE.
In doubles, the Cavaliers' new doubles combinations once again worked well to give them a 1-0 lead. Drew Courtney and Steven Rooda topped Bruno Abdelnour and Dennis Nevolo 8-3 at No. 3, while at the top spot, Michael Shabaz and Alex Domijan defeated Abe Souza and Johnny Hamui 8-4 to clinch the first point of the match.
In singles, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 as Justin Shane topped Stephen Hoh, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 position. Jarmere Jenkins extended the lead to 3-0 with his 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Roy Kalmanovich, before Illinois picked up its only point of the night at No. 5, where Souza defeated Courtney, 6-4, 6-3. Domijan closed out the match as he defeated Hamui 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2.
