BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Illinois women's golf team completed the final 27 holes of the Fighting Camel Fall Classic on Tuesday with a second round score of 302 (+14) and a third round 313 (+25), giving the Orange and Blue an overall score of 923 (+59) to place second in the 12-team field. The Illini, who earned their second runner-up finish of the fall, boasted two individuals in the top six in senior Samantha Sloan and redshirt freshman Jacqueline Calamaro.
"We finished off the second round today pretty well," head coach Renee Slone said. "We gained a little bit of ground, and obviously needed a strong performance in the final round to gain some strokes on Campbell. We did not have a good final round, and it was just a little bit of a struggle here and there for everybody."
Individually, all five Illini finished in the top-25. Sloan (229) led the Orange and Blue, placing fifth after finishing the second round with a 74 (+2) and carding a third round 77 (+5) to finish 13-over par. Calamaro (231) finished two strokes behind Sloan in a tie for sixth, also posting a 74 (+3) in the second round and a 77 (+5) in the third.
Senior Hailey Koschmann and sophomore Ember Schuldt tied for 14th place, with an overall score of 235 (+19). Koschmann finished the second round with a 77 (+5) and posted an 83 (+11) in third, while Schuldt recorded an 82 (+10) in the second round and a 77 (+5) in the third round. Senior Katelin Dilger (238) finished in 24th place, carding a second round 77 (+5) and a third round 82 (+10).
Campbell (902) took the team title while Georgetown (940) finished in third. North Dakota State's Amy Anderson (215) placed first overall, with Campbell's Teresa Urquizu (219) and Kaylin Yost (224) finishing in second and third, respectively.
"Short game, just getting the ball in the hole from 120 yards and in," said Slone of what the team will focus on in the off-season. "And putting, just making more putts really. That's what it boils down to, is just getting it in the hole. Finding a way to score."
The Fighting Camel Fall Classic marks the end of the fall season for the Illini. The Orange and Blue will continue action early next year, as they travel to Boca Raton, Fla., for the Illinois Challenge, a duel match event with Illinois State University on Feb. 4.
