LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Illinois women's golf team completed the third and final round of the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational on Sunday with a 312 (+24), giving them an overall score of 945 (+81) to place fifth in the 16-team field. The Illini, who improved by three strokes with each round of the tournament, finished one shot behind fourth-place Michigan (944) while host Kentucky (924) took first place followed by UCF (932) and Augusta State (940) rounding out the top three.
"Unfortunately, we made some of the same mistakes that we made in rounds one and two," head coach Renee Slone said. "Conditions were definitely tougher in the first and second rounds. Today was a chilly start, but it was nicer out there, so there were opportunities to be had. We're going to continue to work hard this week and make sure that we're in a good position to face anybody."
Senior Samantha Sloan (231) led the Illini and finished sixth overall after shooting an 80 in the third round for a 15-over par total score at the par-72, 6,360-yard Big Blue Course. Sophomore Ember Schuldt (235) finished four strokes behind Sloan after carding a final round 79 to finish in a tie for 14th.
Senior Nora Lucas (240) ended the tournament in a tie for 33rd after posting an 80 in the final round, while seniors Katelin Dilger and Hailey Koschmann turned in the low rounds for the Illini on the final day with a 75 and 78, respectively. They each finished with an overall score of 248 to tie for 57th. Freshman Michelle Mayer (247) competed as an individual and ended the final round with a 78 in her collegiate debut.
Kentucky's Ashleigh Albrecht took first place with a nine-over par 225, while UCF's Kaitlyn Price finished in second with a ten-over par 226.
Illinois will be back in action at the Lady Northern Invitational in French Lick, Ind., on Oct. 10-11. The event will be held at the same course as the 2012 Big Ten Championships.
