CARMEL, Ind. - The Illinois women's golf team wrapped up play at the Hoosier Fall Invitational on Tuesday with a final round 311 (+23), giving the Illini an overall score of 918 (+54) to place third in the 13-team field. The Orange and Blue finished five strokes behind second-place Notre Dame (913) and six strokes behind team champion Eastern Michigan (912). Individually, the Illini placed three golfers in the top 20, led by senior Hailey Koschmann in a tie for sixth.
"We had some adverse weather conditions that we faced today, but nothing we haven't seen before," head coach Renee Slone said. "It seemed like things were going fairly well for us for this first part of the round. We were leading the tournament with six holes to go, and unfortunately, just did not finish our round well."
Koschmann turned in a final round 78 (+6) for an overall score of 226 (+10 and earned her second top-10 finish of the fall. Senior Samantha Sloan (228) finished two strokes behind Koschmann in a tie for 11th after a third round 79 (+7). Senior Katelin Dilger (230) ended the tournament at the par-72, 6,196-yard Crooked Stick Golf Club in a tie for 18th after carding a round three score of 75 (+3).
Senior Nora Lucas (237) finished the third round with a 79 (+7) to finish in a tie for 33rd, while sophomore Ember Schuldt (240) placed in a tie for 41st after posting a third round 80 (+8). Redshirt freshman Jacqueline Calamaro competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 15th after shooting a 75 (+3) in the third round to put her overall score at a 13-over par 229.
"We did play a very, very good second round yesterday, which was the low round of the tournament," Slone said. "The tools are there, and somehow we just have to figure out a way to bring that out on a more consistent basis. We got back on track as far as putting together a solid round, and it was good to get a very good round under our belt on a challenging golf course. Now, we just need to put our finger on a couple things to figure out what it's going to take to get four solid rounds on the board each and every day."
Notre Dame's Becca Huffer placed first individually, carding a four-over par 220, with Wichita State's Gretchen Huhnerkoch (223) finishing three strokes behind.
The Illini will have a two-week break before traveling to Buies Creek, N.C., for the Fighting Camel Fall Classic on Oct. 31- Nov. 1.
