CARMEL, Ind. - The Illinois women's golf team started strong at the Hoosier Fall Invitational, as they sit in second place out of 13 teams after posting a team total of 607 (+31) through 36 holes. The Illini opened the day with a 314 (+26) in the first round and improved by over 20 strokes in the afternoon with a round two score of 293 (+5). The Illini trail tournament leader Notre Dame (603) by just four strokes and have a pair of individuals in the top five after day one of competition at the par-72, 6,196-yard Crooked Stick Golf Club.

"This afternoon we were able to put up three really good scores and add a fourth solid number to that," head coach Renee Slone said. "That was the real difference maker so far in this tournament. In the first round, we struggled, but fortunately in the afternoon, having seen the course and being a little more comfortable with everything out there, we were able to put up some good numbers and jump past some teams. It will take another good round tomorrow."

Senior Hailey Koschmann (148) led the Orange and Blue individually and currently is in third place, only two shots back of the individual leader Ashley Armstrong (146) of Notre Dame. The Lake Forest, Ill., native carded a four-over par 76 in the first round and finished round two with a 72 (E) after posting five birdies. Senior Samantha Sloan (149), who is tied for fourth place, trails Koschmann by one stroke after shooting a 77 (+5) in the first round and an even-par 72 in the second. Senior Katelin Dilger (155) is tied for 22nd after posting a first round 82 (+10) and bouncing back in the second round with a 73 (+1).

Senior Nora Lucas (158) finished day one in a tie for 32nd, tallying a 79 (+7) in both rounds. Sophomore Ember Schuldt (160) turned in an 84 (+12) in the first round and a 76 (+4) in the afternoon to finish in a tie for 46th. Redshirt freshman Jacqueline Calamaro (154), who is competing as an individual, wrapped up day one in a tie for 17th after shooting a 79 (+7) in the first round and a 75 (+3) in the second.

"They need to focus on themselves, stick to their game plan, and just utilize the contours of this golf course to their advantage," Slone said. "There are some greens where the contour of it allows the ball to work in towards the hole. That takes a lot of pressure off of your iron play, knowing that you don't have to be so precise, and that you can just pick your target and just let the greens take the ball to the hole for you."

The third and final round of the Hoosier Fall Invitational begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com while a recap of the final round can be found on fightingillini.com.
