It was a challenging dual-season opener for the 16th-ranked Illinois men's tennis team (0-1), as the Illini fell 7-0 at top-ranked Virginia (2-0) Friday night at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. With the win, the Cavaliers extended their home winning streak to 76 consecutive home matches dating back to 2006.
Illinois put up a fight in doubles early on, with senior Johnny Hamui and junior Dennis Nevolo rallying back to force a tiebreaker against reigning national champions and No. 3 Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney. Virginia proved to be too much in the breaker, however, and went on to clinch the doubles point with a 9-8 (2) win.
In singles, sophomore Stephen Hoh claimed the lone set of the night for the Illini, 6-3, taking on No. 19 Jarmere Jenkins. Jenkins stormed back in the following two sets, however, to secure the shutout for the Cavaliers.
The Illini will be back in action Jan. 28-29 to host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Atkins Tennis Center. The event will begin with second-seeded and No. 17 Oklahoma taking on third-seeded Notre Dame at 2 p.m. on Saturday, before top-seeded Illinois battles fourth-seeded Denver at 6 p.m. The following day, the losing teams will square off at 2 p.m., with the winning teams set to follow at 6 p.m.
