CARY, N.C. - Four members of the Illini women's tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend of play at the Duke Fab Four Invite competing against some of the top players in the country. The Illini combined to go 4-0 against Big Ten rival Northwestern, highlighted by sophomore Rachael White's victory over top-seeded and preseason No. 6 Maria Mosolova, 6-1, 6-3.
"This was the most beneficial fall tournament we have ever competed in because of the quality of competition and amount of matches we were able to get in," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "This was a positive start to our season and I am very proud of the girls' intensity, competitiveness and drive to continue to learn and improve. Allison (Falkin) showed a lot of poise playing in her first collegiate tournament and Rachael White came up with some big time wins to kick off the fall season."
Playing in Section A singles, White went 3-1 on the weekend and claimed fifth place in the section with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Tessa Lyons of North Carolina. Also in Section A was freshman Allison Falkin, who secured her first win as an Illini, topping Northwestern's Nida Hamilton, 6-3, 6-1.
In Section B, sophomore Breanne Smutko collected wins over Brittany Wowchuk of Northwestern, 6-2, 6-2, and Mara Schmidt of Purdue, 6-2, 6-4 en route to the consolation finals, where she came up short against Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Smutko and junior Chelcie Abajian claimed the Section A consolation doubles title, defeating Wisconsin's Aleksandra Markovic and Jenny Hois, 8-0.
The Illini will be back in action next weekend at the UNLV Invitational, Sept. 24-26 in Las Vegas.
