DES MOINES, Iowa - Competing for the first time in his career at the USA Championships, junior Cody Wisslead advanced to the semifinal of the 400m hurdles on Thursday at Drake Stadium. The Sciota, Ill., clocked a time of 51.59 while placing fifth in his heat and 15th overall.

Among the 21 competitors in the first round of the event, 16 athletes moved on to Friday's semifinal, which is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. The top four finishers in each heat along with the next-four fastest times qualified for the next round.

Wisslead is coming off a successful season, where he qualified for his first-ever NCAA Championships and was just two spots from advancing to the final in the 400m hurdles and earning All-America honors. He battled mono during the indoor season, but bounced back during the outdoor campaign, scoring key points for the Orange and Blue at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
