Big Ten Championships Round 3 Individual Scores
Heading into the final round of the Big Ten Championships, the Illinois (919) women's golf team is in 10th place, only one stroke out of ninth. The Orange and Blue improved on day one, shooting a third round score of 303 on the par-72, 6,224-yard University Ridge Golf Course.
"The course has been very scorable," head coach Renee Slone said. "There are plenty of birdies to be made out on the course. We are just making way too many mistakes and not making enough birdies to make up for it. With that combination, it's hard to post a good number."
Sophomore Hailey Koschmann (225) paced the Illini individually with a third round 74 and is tied for 23rd at nine-over par. Junior Raquel Hopton (226) is one stroke behind Koschman after a third round 74 and is tied for 26th at 10-over par.
"Raquel hit a number of very good shots," Slone said of her junior's play. "She had some opportunities that slipped away, but she was able to capitalize on a few others too. If her putter was hot she would have had the capability of taking it low, but in the end things kind of evened out where she didn't make some, but she got a very fortunate break on one hole."
Sophomores Samantha Sloan (234) and Kaitlyn Wampler (235) each tallied a third round 78, with Sloan in a tie for 47th at 18-over par and Wampler at 19-over par and in a tie for 49th. Rounding out the Illini scoring on Saturday were sophomores Katelin Dilger (242), who had a third round 77 and is 26-over par, and Maureen Liddy (246), who shot a third round 82 and is 30-over par.
No. 8 Purdue has a 15-stroke lead over second-place No. 12 Ohio State and is one-over par for the tournament. Rounding out the top five teams are No. 10 Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
Michigan's Ashley Bauer has a one shot lead over Purdue's Laura Gonzalez and is six-under par for the tournament.
"If we can put together a solid round with a couple of low numbers and two solid scores, we have a chance of taking over the eighth place spot," said Slone. "At this point in time, ideally, that's what we would hope to achieve."
The fourth and final round of the Big Ten Championships starts at 9 a.m. Sunday. For a full recap of Sunday's final round check fightingillini.com and for live action visit golfstat.com.
