GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Junior Allison Buckley wrapped up the Illinois women's gymnastics season at the NCAA Championships individual event finals on Saturday, placing 16th on vault with a 9.5063 at Florida's Stephen O'Connell Center. The Schaumburg, Ill., native became just the second ever Illini to take part in an event final, with junior Melissa Fernandez, who accomplished the feat last season on beam, being the other.
"Allison did really well on her first vault, but just was a little too aggressive on the second," head coach Bob Starkell said. "The interesting thing about the vault finals is that you need two different vaults to really do well, and in Allison's case, she really didn't have two different ones. She started practicing one that she had done in high school last week and tried to do that vault as best she could today."
Buckley was required to complete two separate types of vaults as part of individual event finals, and then the two scores were averaged together for the final total. She stuck her usual Yurchenko full and earned a 9.850, but then fell on the landing of a handspring front pike and scored a 9.1625.
On Thursday's semifinal session, Buckley picked up first-team All-America honors, as she tied for third on vault with a 9.900. She is just the second Illini first teamer in school history and the first Illinois gymnast to garner two All-America accolades in her career, as she also was a second-team selection on beam in 2008.
UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa won the NCAA vault title with a score of 9.9250. Zamarripa also helped the Bruins capture their sixth NCAA National Championship on Friday night during Super Six Team Finals, as they easily beat out Oklahoma (197.250) with a score of 197.725.
