Just a month after winning her first career individual title, Illinois sophomore Hailey Koschmann has her second as she took medalist honors at the Indiana Invitational, held at the par 72, 6,142-yard Indiana University golf course. Koschmann shot a three-under par 69 in the third and final round to finish the tournament with a 54-hole total of 214, two-under par. Illlinois finished in 10th out of 16 teams after a final round of 302 to finish with a tournament total of 913, 49-over par.
"It was another solid round of golf for Hailey," head coach Renee Slone said. "Obviously, she made very few mistakes, just played extremely solid again, knocking it close and taking advantage of those opportunities. It was just a great tournament for her."
Koschmann's 69 and 214 ties her career low round and tournament scores and the 214 is the second lowest 54-hole tournament total in program history. She finished one shot ahead of runner-up Laura Nochta of Indiana.
"I played really well," Koschmann said about her tournament. "I went into the tournament with the same exact mindset as Eagle Landing. I just wanted to play it shot-by-shot and not to have any expectations or try not to think about where I finish. I just wanted to play each shot the best I could and I think it's been working for me the past month or so."
The highlight of Koschmann's final round came on the 17th hole where she holed in her shot with a wedge from the left rough, 106 yards out from the hole, an eagle on the scorecard. She also had three birdies on the day.
"I was hitting the ball well all day," Koschmann said. "This one was a good one. I hitting it good all day and it finally went into the hole. This tournament will definitely give me more confidence and it feels great to be playing well going into the end stretch of the season, but I'm going to try to keep the same mindset as before."
Sophomore Samantha Sloan had a third round 76 to finish in 20th with a 54-hole total of 224, eight-over par. Sophomore Katelin Dilger, playing as an individual, tied for 43rd after a final round 77 to finish with a 54-hole total of 233, 17-over par.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Wampler and Freshman Crystal Smith each finished with a tournament total of 238, 22-over par, after shooting final rounds of 77 and 80, respectively. Rounding out the Illini was sophomore Nora Lucas, who shot a third round 83 to finish the tournament with a 54-hole total of 245, 29-over par.
"Unfortunately we are not getting consistent play," Slone said. "That is something that we are going to need to work on this week, figuring out how we can get a solid three to four score each and every time. This week we're going to work quite a bit on putting, specifically short putts, but also a lot of breaking putts as well."
The Orange and Blue have little less than a week until they're next in action, as they travel to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 17-18.
