The Illinois women's golf team heads into the final round of the 16-team Indiana Invitational, held at the par 72 6,142-yard Indiana University golf course, in ninth place after shooting rounds of 310-300.
"It was a tough [first] round," head coach Renee Slone said. "We made some improvements in the afternoon and had more consistent scoring across the board in the second round and posted a solid 300. This is a course they are capable of posting a really good number, if they are smart because there are some holes on this golf course where it is all about position."
Once again sophomore Hailey Koschmann (145) is in contention individually, sitting in second place after rounds of 71-74 for one-over par. Koschmann is two shots out of first place. Not far of Koschmann's pace is fellow sophomore Samantha Sloan (148), who shot rounds of 73-75 for four-over par and is tied for seventh place. Koschmann hit the flag stick twice in her afternoon round on approach shots, while Sloan had four birdies on the day.
"In the morning round both Hailey and Samantha played very well," Slone said of Koschmann and Sloan. "They are playing solid golf, giving themselves some opportunities. They are just playing smart golf."
Freshman Crystal Smith (158) had rounds of 83-75 for fourteen-over par and tied for 51st place. Rounding out the Illini were sophomores Kaitlyn Wampler (161), who shot rounds of 83-78, and Nora Lucas (161), with rounds of 85-76, at 17-over par.
Sophomore Katelin Dilger (156) competed as an individual and is tied for 34th place after shooting rounds of 78-78, 12-over par.
"We just want to go out and play smart golf," Slone said. "There are certain holes on this golf course where you just have to play position golf and that means just getting it from point A to point B to point C. There are other holes where you can play more aggressively and just understanding when those opportunities present themselves and take advantage when the possibility arises is important. We'll just put together a solid round and see where that puts us."
The third and final round of the Indiana Invitational tees off at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning. For a full recap of Sunday's round check Fightingillini.com, and for live action, visit golfstat.com.
