CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - After a solid opener at Georgia Tech, the Illinois men's track and field squad is back in action this weekend at the Mike Poehlein Invitational, hosted by Purdue on Saturday, April 3. The Illini head to West Lafayette, Ind., for the competition at the Rankin Track and Field, with field events set to begin at 10 a.m. followed by running events at 11 a.m.
"This meet is just another step to get back into competition mode," interim head coach Mike Turk said. "We are working on reestablishing our focus and getting the rest of our guys who haven't competed since indoors back into action. This is a chance for our guys to show where they're at and how well they've practiced over the last month."
A small contingent of Illini competed at last week's season opener while a majority of the team is scheduled to compete at Purdue. Among the distance crew, the Mickow brothers will run the 1,500m in their outdoor debut along with Kremske and freshman Nathan Bohne in the same event. Three Illini, Jordan Hebert, Phil Pompei and Ron Revord, will compete in the 5,000m.
The Orange and Blue debut in the 4x100m relay, with senior Azeez Shogbuyi, junior Cody Wisslead, sophomore Stanley Azie and freshman Josh Zinzer. Wisslead also is slated to run both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, and the other three Illini from the relay will double up in the 100m and 200m.
A week after taking second in the 4x400m relay, the foursome of juniors Dan Jones and Shane Daniel and freshmen Bai Kabba and Malcolm Taylor go for the title this weekend. Jones, Daniel and Kabba also will compete in the 200m and 400m while Taylor will run the 800m. Senior Brian Beaird, junior Dan Kremske and sophomore Kyle Engnell, who won the 3,000m steeplechase last weekend, join Taylor in the 800m.
Only two Illini are among the field event competitors, with sophomore Roger Jones in the long jump and junior Oz Lifshitz in the triple jump. The hammer throw is the only event on Friday night, with junior Matt McHugh, who reset his own school record in the event at the Yellow Jack Invitational, scheduled to compete.
