Doubles Final
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In the final day of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, the seventh-seeded Illini tandem of senior Abe Souza and junior Dennis Nevolo collected a win in the semifinal round before coming up just short in the title match. The tournament was the first time the duo played together this fall and they now boast a team-best 5-1 mark.
"The guys did a great job all weekend," assistant coach Marcos Asse said. "The theme of the week for doubles was to have fun and enjoy playing and I think everyone did that. I can't really fault Abe or Dennis for their effort or performance, if anything, they just wanted it too much. But they played great, it was a high-quality doubles match and we hope to carry this over into next weekend at Big Tens."
In the semifinals, Souza and Nevolo knocked off eighth-seeded Balazs Novak and Devin McCarthy (Ohio State), 8-5, before being edged by fifth-seeded Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt (Ohio State), 9-8 (8).
The Illini will be in action this weekend at the Big Ten Singles Tournament, Oct. 29-Nov. 1 in East Lansing, Mich.
