Sophomore Kaitlyn Wampler led the Fighting Illini by firing a 75 in the final round of the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate on Wednesday. Wampler finished with a three-round total of 224 on the par 72, 6,483-yard Highlands Ridge golf course and placed 7th. Illinois (912) dropped one place to finish 5th after totaling a 304 in the final round.
"Kaitlyn had a steady round today. She didn't quite hit the ball as well as yesterday but she knows what she needs to work on," said head coach Renee Slone.
Sophomore Samantha Sloan turned in a 74 today and finished in a tie for 23rd. Hailey Koschmann fired consistent rounds of 79-76-78 to finish in a tie for 25th, one stroke behind Sloan. Rounding out the Illinois lineup is junior Raquel Hopton, who shot a final round score of 85 and finished in a tie for 41st, and Nora Lucas, who fired a 77 to finish off the first tournament.
"Our round for today was solid. We gave a few shots away here and there but it was a great first tournament," said Slone.
No. 5 host University of Denver (879) fired a score of 294 in the final round to hold their lead and win the team title in the 13-team field. UC Davis (893), Baylor (898) and Iowa State (911) round out the top five.
University of Denver's Stephanie Sherlock (215) took home the title and beat UC Davis' Alice Kim (216) by one stroke.
The Illini will head to the Lady Northern Invitational in Madison, Wis., on Sept. 27-28.
