The Fighting Illini women's golf team advanced to fourth place after the second round of the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate with a score of 296 in 18 holes, making their total score 608 at the Highlands Ranch golf course.
With snow in the forecast tomorrow, the Orange and Blue made sure to make today's round count.
"We went into today's round with the mindset that it could quite possibly be the final round of the tournament. Hopefully we do get to play tomorrow but if not we definitely competed well today," said head coach Renee Slone.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Wampler birdied four holes on the par 72, 6,483-yard course and fired a par score of 72. She leads all Illini in a tie for 5th, moving up seven spots from yesterday, with a cumulative score of 149 after day two.
"Kaitlyn hit the ball very well and she finished her round strong. At hole 17 she made about a 30-footer to birdie and she had a very solid round overall," said Slone.
Junior Raquel Hopton is three shots back from Wampler and in13th place after shooting a 75 in the second round and a 77 on Monday. Hailey Koschmann fired a 76 and moved up four spots to a tie for 20th. Sophomore Samantha Sloan tallied her second round score 79 and is in a tie for 32nd. Nora Lucas turned in a 73 after being disqualified yesterday and will continue play tomorrow.
"Everybody was focused today and had their game plan and stuck to it," said Slone.
No. 5 host University of Denver held their lead today, firing a 585. The Pioneers lead Baylor by 13 strokes and UC-Davis follows closely in third place by one stroke.
Baylor's Hannah Burke (143) and University of Denver's Stephanie Sherlock lead all individuals by two strokes at 1-under par.
