Finnegan's Summer Blog #2

June 26, 2009

As I mentioned in last week's blog we won our first round of NCAA back in May... Yes that was very exciting for many reasons. Number one it had been our team's goal at the beginning of the year and Number two, well because we got to shave Dave's head... As a team we made a bet with Dave before the NCAA tournament that every round we won would mean a shorter and shorter buzz cut... As many of you know, Dave loves his hair... He spends at least an hour of each waking day running his fingers through his hair with pomade to give it his faux-hawk (a smaller version of a Mohawk) style ... Winning our first round left us with a level three on the shaver, which is short however we were hoping for shorter - maybe next year?? We all took turns running the shaver through his hair, as he watched his long locks fall to the ground... He wasn't a huge fan of the look that we had given him as we saw him later at dinner with a hat covering his newly shaven-do.

A couple weeks have passed, and yes Dave's hair has slowly grown back but it is still is a little shorter than normal ... I was hoping for it to never grow back... I think someone else was hoping for that too... Earlier this week, Dave took a nice little stroll from Bielfeldt (his office building) to Atkins Tennis Center, which takes approximately 1:07 minute, or as Dave thought... It actually takes more along the lines of a 3:15 minute sprint... As he was jogging to Atkins Tennis Center, he was physically attacked... Now I know what you are probably thinking... Dave got attacked by a human... That is what I thought when Marisa first told me the story... But to my surprise I came to find out that he was attacked by an "Eagle"... or more like a Falcon... and now the most recent account of the story says it was a Hawk... Regardless of what type of bird the attacker actually was, it flew down and clawed the head of his prey (a.k.a. Dave)... However, to prevent a more ferocious attack Dave was able to outrun the Eagle/Falcon/Hawk due to his new workout plan of stadiums, miles, and strength training... Blood was pouring out of his head, again I think this might be a slight fabrication of the actual event ... But sure enough the next day Dave showed me his battle wounds and there was evidence that some sort of specie had tried taking off his head ... I like to think that the "bird" was just trying to send a message to Dave to keep the short buzz! Dave is still recovering from this tragic accident.

Now, if you do not know already, our team is quite competitive on and off the court... We can turn anything into a competition... Dr. Powell, a good friend of the Illinois Women's Tennis Team was so nice to invite us to his home for a nice dinner and some quality time to spend with each other... We were given the choice of whether to eat or play our new favorite game Taboo... Is that even a question with our team?? I can safely say that we choose food over anything any day of the week... But back to Taboo...This game can get pretty irritating if you happen to mess up because a person is next to you buzzing a loud annoying sound in your ear to tell the person they have "failed"... I wasn't a huge fan when someone else did it to me, but I sure loved doing it to other people...It's funny how that's usually the case... It definitely is a ton of fun and has replaced our old traditional game of Catch Phrase... I highly recommend playing, but beware it can get loud!

Next on our list is the Relay for Life event that Megan has organized for our team to help raise awareness and support for cancer... If you are not busy, come out on Saturday evening to Centennial High school and walk with us from 6 P.M. to 6 A.M. I don't exactly know how we will all be holding up for 12 hours of walking but it should be fun! Michelle told us if we get bored of walking we can always do some lunges... I think we'll pass! Hopefully we can manage to find a few breaks during the night to play Taboo!
