Illini Open Play at Western Michigan Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Fighting Illini women's tennis team went 5-3 in opening action at the Western Michigan Super Challenge, which includes players from DePaul, Indiana, Iowa State, Louisville and Notre Dame. The day was highlighted by the doubles duo of sophomore Amy Allin and junior Annie McCarthy, who improved to 12-1 for the fall after recording two wins earlier today.

Allin and McCarthy defeated Louise Noe and Sarah Miller (Louisville), 8-5 before topping Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel of Indiana, 8-4. The teammates also were victorious in singles play, as Allin swept Tessa Lang (Iowa State), 6-1, 6-1 and McCarthy defeated Jenna Langhorst (Iowa State), 6-2, 6-3.

Also competing for the Illini were seniors Kristina Minor and Christine Stromberg, who fell 8-6 to Stefanie Villajuan and Ashley Irvin (Louisville) and 8-4 to Megan Matter and Lindsey Stuckey (Indiana). Minor was victorious in her lone singles match of the day, topping Maria-Christine Chartier (Iowa State), 6-4, 6-4, while Stromberg was defeated by Reka Kelemen (Iowa State), 7-5, 6-3.

The Orange and Blue will be back in action tomorrow morning for day two of the tournament.
