Regional II Final Results
Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Singles Main Draw
EVANSTON, Ill. -The Illinois women's tennis team saw its run at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships come to an end earlier today, as the three Illini remaining in the tournament were eliminated in the third round of the singles main draw.
Sophomore Chelcie Abajian fell to third-seeded Samantha Murray (Northwestern), 6-2, 6-1, while fourth-seeded senior Megan Fudge was defeated by Lauren Lui (Northwestern), 6-4, 6-1 and junior Leigh Finnegan lost to No. 5-seed Sonja Molnar (Iowa), 6-1, 6-1.
In action at the Regional II, sophomore Amy Allin and junior Annie McCarthy defeated Kelcie Klockenga and Jessica Young (Iowa), 8-3 to claim the doubles title and improved to 10-1 for the fall. In singles action, Allin and senior Christine Stromberg were both one match away from competing for the championship, as Allin fell to Zuzana Chmelarova (Iowa), 6-1, 6-1 and Stromberg was topped by eventual-champion Aleksandra Markovic (Wisconsin), 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.
"I'm proud of the way all the girls played this weekend," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "It was definitely worthwhile to get everyone a lot of matches. It was nice to win doubles and individually, Amy (Allin) has really improved her game. Christine (Stromberg) is a warrior and would run through walls to track down the ball. She is the epitome of what we want for our program. Unfortunately for both of them, it just didn't work out in the semis, but I'm proud of everyone's performances."
The Illini take a week off before returning to action Nov. 6-8 at the Western Michigan Invitational.
