LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Illinois women's tennis team was in action over the weekend at the University of Kentucky Invitational, Oct. 9-11 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. As a team, the Orange and Blue recorded 11 wins in singles and eight wins in doubles play over the three-day tournament.
The senior doubles duo of Kristina Minor and Christine Stromberg went 3-1, with their lone loss coming in the championship match of Flight "B," 8-4 to Vanderbilt's Erica Robertson and Heather Steinbauer, while junior Annie McCarthy and sophomore Amy Allin claimed two straight matches to advance to the semifinals of Flight "B," before being defeated by eventual champions Robertson and Steinbauer, 8-3.
In singles action, Allin finished 3-1, claiming victories over Karina Kedzo (East Tennessee State), 2-6, 6-2, 12-10, Amelia Harris (Louisville), 6-0, 4-6, 12-10 and Kari Wig (Michigan), 6-2, 6-3, while McCarthy picked up a pair of wins against Riley Blanks (Virginia), 6-3, 6-1 and Martina Beckmann (Armstrong Atlantic State University), 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 and Stromberg added two wins as well, topping Cassie Carver (Abilene Christian University), 6-3, 6-3 and Alyze Pagal (Eastern Kentucky), 6-4, 6-2.
"Christine (Stromberg) played well in her first matches of the fall," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "I was proud of the way she competed. But as a team, we have a lot of work ahead of us and are not satisfied with this tournament."
The Illini are back in action Oct. 22 for the ITA Midwest Regionals.
