CARMEL, Ind. - After 36 holes at the Indiana Invitational, Illinois (601) sits in fourth place, ahead of three top-50 teams and six Big Ten competitors. The Orange and Blue opened the IU Invite with a round of 294 at the par-72 5,938-yard Crooked Stick Golf Club, tying the fourth-lowest round in school history. After a second round 307, the Illini finished the day only behind tournament-leader No. 6 Purdue (561), second-place UNLV (590) and third-place Ohio State (595).

"It was a very consistent day," Illinois coach Renee Slone said. "We played great this morning, but not quite as sharp this afternoon. We are still in great position to make a move tomorrow."

Freshman Raquel Hopton (148) led the Illini on day one, tying for 12th after firing an even-par 72 and four-over 76. Senior Stephanie Mory (150) recorded the next best score for the Illini and is tied for 17th, tallying rounds of 74 and 76. Last year's winner, senior Seul Ki Park (151), carded rounds of 75 and 76, tying her for 24th. Hopton, Mory and Park each notched four birdies on the day.

Senior Kristine Cook (152) opened the day on her old home course with a one-over 73 followed by a second round 79, tying her for 28th. Senior Kristin Kallergis (164) turned in rounds of 83 and 81, tying her for 71st.

Junior Nancy Featherstone (149) competed as an individual and fired a career-low opening round 71. After a second round 78, she sits tied for 14th at five-over. Featherstone also carded four birdies on the day.

"Nancy played great today," Slone said. "She had very solid rounds with two chip-ins and no three-putts. She minimized her mistakes and had nothing worse than a bogey."

The Boilermakers lead the 15-team field by 29 strokes. Host Indiana and Texas sit tied for fifth with 36-hole totals of 602.

The Indiana Invitational wraps up with a final round on Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m.

"We just want to go out tomorrow and play our own game," Slone said. "Conditions are excellent, making it very possible to shoot low numbers."
