Just one day after getting numerous opportunities to try out for an NFL team, the St. Louis Rams came calling for University of Illinois fullback Russ Weil. Weil becomes the sixth Illini to a sign free agent deal. With Rashard Mendenhall drafted in the first round, he becomes the seventh that will be heading to training camp late this summer.
Weil was one of the unsung heroes in Mendenhall's record-breaking season. As his "personal protector" (a term used by Mendenhall), Mendenhall was able to set the single-season rushing record with 1,681 yards as well as six other school marks. The 2007 season was the most prolific rushing year in school history, topping the 3,300-yard mark. Weil, himself, averaged 4.1 yards per carry in 2007 and caught two passes for 34 yards.
