AMES, Iowa - Junior Gary Miller won the 600 yard run and Dominique Worsley took second in the 60m, propelling the Illinois men's track and field team to a strong finish competing against over 90 teams at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday.

Miller's time of 1 minute, 10.40 seconds (1:10.40) defeated the other 19 runners in the race, while Worsley clocked a time of 6.77 to edge out Florida's Willie Perry for second place in a photo finish final. Jeremy Hall of Florida won the 60m with a time of 6.68.

"We are putting all the pieces together," head coach Wayne Angel said. "We came home with an event champion and Worsley is starting to run very well. A lot of our athletes stepped up, and it looks like we could be headed for a very strong showing at the Big Ten Championships."

Junior Andrew Zollner was sixth in the pole vault, smashing his personal best with a height of 16 feet, 10 3/4 inches.

In the 400m, sophomore Brandon Gray ran a personal-best time of 47.47 to take 11th. Junior Yawusa Kinda and freshman Dan Jones both timed personal-bests as well, finishing in 19th (48.08) and 25th (48.44), respectively.

Illinois took eighth in the 4x400m relay running without All-American Gakologelwang Masheto, as the squad of Gray, Kinda, Eugene Ellis and Miller finished in 3:10.85 on the 300m track.

"That's a fantastic finish without Masheto," Angel said. "With him in the race, that relay should make a lot of noise."

Sophomore Mike Murray finished 12th in the mile with a personal-best time of 4:09.51 that is also the Illini's top performance in the event this season.

At the UW Husky Classic in Seattle, sophomore Jacob Nachel moved up to sixth all-time on the Illinois 5,000m list, running a career-best 14:13.49 and finished 21st.

"He just missed an NCAA provisional qualifying time," distance coach Wendel McRaven said. "It was a great performance for him. You can't ask for anything more than running a lifetime best."

Illinois will compete next weekend at the Friday Night Invitational in Charleston, Ill. on Feb. 22 and head to the Big Ten Indoor Championships from March 1-2 in Madison, Wis.
