Annie McCarthy: Illinois on the Move

Feb. 15, 2008

In the sixth edition of the Illini 2008 Blog, freshman Annie McCarthy keeps you up-to-date with the Illinois women's tennis team and continues to share her light-hearted and comedic view of the team's recent wins over DePaul and Kansas with the fans.

Illinois continues its schedule this weekend when it travels to No. 48 Washington on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. CT, noon local.

Victory has never tasted so sweet my friends. After an extremely successful weekend, we were all thrilled at practice to find that we finally hit the rankings at 68!

It all started at Biaggi's on Friday around 3:30 p.m. for a little pre-match meal. Michelle ordered a coke with real Grenadine -- which is a type of cherry syrup. Christine was sure she was ordering alcohol with her coke. Now, mind you, Michelle drinks about three of these per meal whenever we are on the road, so that makes it all the more hilarious of Christine's reaction. A very delicious meal, and a new practice mix CD with our favorite Indian song, was just the remedy we needed to finally win the doubles point, which was just the momentum we needed to win the match 6-1!

With a victory under our belt, we were back at the airport off to Kansas. We had a rocky start in the doubles, losing the point with some very close matches. After the doubles point, I took to standing to cheer -- not because there were no chairs to be found, but because Alejandra nailed me straight in the butt with her first serve during our match. For those of you who are extremely concerned about my well being (Mom), I am surviving, although I can't say that the perfectly circular bruise I have doesn't hurt.

With the help of a guest cheerleader, Mrs. Wang -- who told me I was the loudest person in the world -- we cheered the singles lineup on to a close, but satisfying win! I'm going to go ahead and say that the highlight of my weekend was when Megan's opponent from Poland didn't understand that she was asking for another ball, and just sat there and stared at Megan. After 5 attempts to ask for the ball, Alejandra finally yelled from the sideline, "THE YELLOW THING". Hands down, the funniest thing I have heard in a long time.

This weekend we are headed to Washington and are very eager to continue our winning streak!! Look forward to Shivani's blog next week to tell you all about it!!!

Until Next Time,
