Head coach Wayne Angel and his Fighting Illini men's track and field team traveled a small squad to Carbondale, Ill., this weekend to compete in the SIU Invitational. The Illini finished the day in second-place with 118.50 points, two regional qualifiers and four first-place finishes.
The Orange and Blue shown well on the track today, with two regional qualifying marks coming from junior Andrew Zollner and senior Tramell Smith. Zollner placed first in pole vault with a 16'06.75", and competed in the javelin, placing second with a 185'03.00". Smith won the 800m with a time of 1:50.14.
Not far behind Zollner in pole vault was junior John Adamczyk in second with a 15'09.00". Also placing first on the day was senior Anthony Young in the 400m hurdles with a 51.94 and sophomore Greg Shroka in high jump (6'08.75").
"I feel that we got a lot of work done today," Angel said. "We're continuing to improve each meet, and I am very pleased with where we are."
The Illini return to action when they travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the Stanford Invite on March 30-31.
