CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. - Junior Seul Ki Park fired an opening round 74 to hold the sole possession of the lead after the opening round of the 36-hole Cincinnati Spring Invitational in Crystal River, Fla. on Friday. Illinois posted a score of 320 at the Plantation Inn Golf Course and sits in fifth place in the nine-team field after day one.
Park fired 36 on the front nine and followed that up with a 38 on the back nine to hold a one shot lead over four others. Senior Meghan Naik came in second for the Illini, carding an 81 to tie for 24th overall. Juniors Stephanie Mory (82) and Kristin Kallergis (83) also scored for the Illini and are tied for 31st and 34th, respectively. Junior Casey Burden (87) was also in the UI line-up, while junior Kristine Cook played as an individual and carded a 79, which ties her for 14th place.
The battle for the team title is a tight one, with the top-four teams separated by just four shots. Middle Tennessee State is on top with a score of 309, one shot better than Princeton. Florida Atlantic (311) and host Cincinnati (313) are just in front of the Fighting Illini.
Illinois is the defending champion of the tournament, which will conclude with the final 18 holes on Saturday.
