Rose Bowl Trip Day 1 Blog: Illini Practice, Visit Disneyland

Dec. 26, 2007

After arriving in Los Angeles late Christmas night, we were up and ready to go this morning. We got started with a great breakfast--there was plenty to choose from. That set the tone for the day.

After breakfast, we had our position meetings at the hotel. Then we boarded the buses for a 40-minute ride to the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., where we practiced and got our lifting in. We were a little rusty after the Christmas break with five days off from practice. It was short and sweet, but we knocked off the rust. It was nice to practice in the morning, so we could enjoy the other events later in the day.

After practice, we had lunch on the buses while we traveled to Disneyland in Anaheim. I hadn't been there since I was 13. It was fun. We definitely went on as many rides as w could, almost running from ride to ride. Space Mountain was first; that was a blast, and it set the tone for the afternoon. Our group thought it would be a good idea to hit Splash Mountain early, so we would have time to dry off before it got dark and cooled off. It's a good thing my warmup suit was water repellant. As for the other guys--Brit Miller and Russ Weil (cough, cough)--I guess they weren't as fortunate.

After a few more rides, we got something to eat. We had these $15 meal tickets w could use one time only, and we would get no change. So we figured out how to use all but about 15 cents to get our fill.

After eating, we went to the Tower of Terror. That was a great time (see photo).

When we got out of there, it was 5:50 p.m., and we had to be at the ESPN Zone by 6. So we packed in as much fun as possible at Disneyland.

We had some food at ESPN Zone and played lots of video games. I didn't play as many as most of the other guys, but I definitely remember the game where you row the boat in the rapids--that put a little burn on your shoulders. I think Mrs. Zook could vouch for that. Many of the players broke a full sweat doing those games.

The best part of the day was seeing the child coming out in a lot of the guys.
