Illini Women Close Fall on a High Note

BOSTON - The Illinois women's tennis team closed its fall schedule today with another solid performance at the Harvard Invitational being hosted on the campus of Harvard University in Boston. The Illini closed out the weekend with a total of 12 wins in singles and five wins in doubles to end the fall season on a high note.

"We had a very good weekend as a whole to end the fall schedule," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "However, Leigh Finnegan's return to singles action definitely had to be the highlight of the weekend. Leigh came through with a great win versus a very good player from Texas A&M today, and showed us glimpses of what she is capable of doing."

Sophomores Megan Fudge and Leigh Finnegan were winners on the day in singles, as Fudge took down Elzé Potgieter of Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-4, while Finnegan upended Anna Blagodarova of Texas A&M, 6-7(6), 6-3, 10-5. Rounding out the Illini wins on the day was freshman Christine Stromberg taking down Catriona Stewart of Harvard, 6-3, 6-4.

With the conclusion of the Harvard Invitational, the Illinois women's tennis team closes action for the fall season. Illinois will be back in action when it opens the dual part of the schedule on the road in 2008 as it travels to Boca Raton, Fla., to take on Florida Atlantic on Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. CT. The Illini open their home schedule against Marquette on Jan. 19 at the Atkins Tennis Center.
