Iowa City, Iowa - The Illinois women's golf team finished third in its first tournament of the 2006 fall season, the Hawkeye Intercollegiate at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa. The Fighting Illini battled wet conditions on Sunday morning and fired a 323 for a three-round total of 961 behind host Iowa's 933 and Missouri State's 943.
"The team was excited about starting the season and I was excited about beginning a new challenge," said Renee Slone after her first tournament as Illinois' head coach. "The were some bright spots this weekend, but more importantly, now we know what we need to work on. We'll be doing a lot of short game and putting work this week in practice."
Junior Stephanie Mory fired an 80 on Sunday for a three-round total of 238 to lead the Illini with a seventh-place overall finish. Junior Soul Ki Park had the best UI round of the day with a 79 to finish tied for 12th overall with a total of 242. Sophomore Nancy Featherstone had her best round of the weekend with an 81. Meghan Naik fired an 83 on Sunday and finished tied for 14th overall, while Kristine Cook, the top Illini after the first two rounds, struggled to an 86 in the final round and also tied for 14th overall.
Missouri State's Sally Hinton carded a 74 on Sunday to overtake Iowa's Karla Murra for the Individal crown. Hinton had a three-round total of 225 for the tournament to win by three-strokes over Murra.
The Fighting Illini head to East Lansing, Mich., next weekend (Sept. 16-17) for the Michigan State Lady Northern Invitational.
