Godfrey, Naik Named NGCA All-American Scholars

July 20, 2006

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Teams were announced this week and pair of Illini, senior Megan Godfrey and junior Meghan Naik, were among those recognized with the prestigious honor.

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% (Division I) or 66% (Division II & III) of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year. It is the ninth consecutive year Illinois has had at least one individual honored.

"Megan and Meghan have worked very hard both in the classroom and on the golf course to achieve this tremendous honor," said Illini head coach Renee Slone. "They are part of a select few individuals who receive this award and should be very proud of this accomplishment. We hope to continue the tradition of our golfers receiving this award for years to come."

This is the third time Godfrey has been named an NGCA All-American Scholar and is the first time for Naik.

Godfrey, who wrapped up her college career this past spring, recently won the 2006 Illinois Women's Golf Association (IWGA) Amateur Championship. She saw second on the Illini with a 78.25 stroke average in 2006 and was the top UI finished in a team-best five tournament. Naik, meanwhile, had the fifth-best stroke average on the team (79.52).
