Champaign, Ill. -
The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics announced today that Sujay Lama has resigned as head women's tennis coach. Lama compiled a dual-meet record of 108-84, including 60-34 in Big Ten play during his eight-year career. He led the Illini into five NCAA Tournament appearances and had the squad ranked as high as No. 16 in the nation in the spring of 2004.
"I want to thank Ron Guenther for giving me the opportunity to coach at Illinois for the last eight years," Lama said. "It has truly been a blessing for me and my family to be part of this great university and the community. It has been very rewarding to coach all the wonderful student-athletes during this time.
"However, this is the right time for me to move on and explore other opportunities," Lama continued. "I am excited about the challenges ahead, but sad to say goodbye to the Illini family."
Illinois finished the 2006 season with an 8-15 overall record, including 3-9 in Big Ten play.
A national search for a replacement will begin immediately.
