The University of Illinois women's tennis team conclude the third and final day of the Yonex Spartan Cup Sunday (Sept. 25) in East Lansing, Mich. The Illini finished their first weekend of the season with an 18-8 singles record and 9-4 in doubles.
"We played a lot of matches this weekend," said Coach Lama. "I was pleased because we showed a lot improvement from Friday to Sunday. We are at a good starting point but there is still much to improve."
Macall Harkins and Momei Qu both reached the flight A singles semifinals and Pavlina Akritas reached the flight B singles semifinal. The Orange and Blue sent two teams to the flight A doubles semifinals with the tandem of Momei Qu and Emily Wang reaching the finals. They lost on Sunday to Maria Klokotzky and Robyn White of Louisville , 8-5. Klokotzky/White edged out Illinois' Macall Harkins and Brianna Knue in the semifinal, 8-3.
Shivani Dave' and Alejandra Meza Cuadra won the flight A doubles consolation by default.
"We have a short week coming up," said Lama. "We'll concentrate on improving in the areas I saw needed work and I'm looking forward to next weekend."
The Orange and Blue have another busy weekend with the team scheduled to compete at the Kentucky Invitational Sept. 30-Oct. 1. The team will be without Macall Harkins and Brianna Knue who will be in Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the Riviera ITA All-America Championships, Oct.1-6.
