EAST LANSING, Mich. - After shooting a season-best 300 in Saturday's second round, the University of Illinois women's golf team carded a final-round 325 on Sunday afternoon at the Mary Fossum Invitational.
While the Illini struggled to a 13th place finish, the host Michigan State Spartans continued their dominance, putting up a three-round 889. The score was the best three-round total in the tournament's history; the title was the Spartans' second in three years. Second-place Southern Methodist finished eight strokes behind at 33-over 897. Saturday's individual leader, Northwestern Wildcat Jennifer Hong (+4), ended the final round tied with Kent State's Becky Wood.
Senior Megan Godfrey tied for 40th place to lead the Orange and Blue. Haslett, Mich. native Stephanie Mory needed one more stroke than Godfrey and finished tied for 44th place. The sophomore followed her second-round 77 with another 77 - the second straight Sunday she has done so. Mory's round included consecutive birdies on her seventh and eighth holes.
Next weekend, the team competes in the Lady Northern Intercollegiate. The tournament, hosted by Indiana University, is the Big Ten fall preview.
