Rio Verde, Ariz. - Illinois finished strong in the final round of the 17-team East/West Rio Verde Invitational, shooting a 308 to finish in 13th place in their first tournament of the spring. Illinois' 308 in the second round was the fifth-lowest team score of the day. The tournament format counted the low four out of six teams scores. However, using the traditional NCAA scoring of counting the low four out of five team scores and designating an individual, the Illini actually finished in 12th place in the tournament. The East/West Rio Verde Invitational was held at the 6,069-yard, par 72 Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Arizona. Kent State took home the team title with a two-day score of 604.
After opening yesterday with a 4-over par 76, sophomore Megan Godfrey finished strong, recording a final round 2-over par 74 to finish tied for 8th place. Godfrey's 8th place finish marked the third Top-10 finish of her collegiate career. Senior Marla Cox and freshman Meghan Naik also finished well, posting final round scores of 78 and 77. Also scoring for the Illini were junior Lyndsey Milligan with a 79 and junior Megan O'Neal with a 90. Kent State's Gabby Wedding took home the individual title with a 145.
The Illini return to action March 13-15 at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic in St. Croix, VI.
