Chula Vista, Calif. - A rare pattern of inclement weather in southern California forced the cancellation of today's final round of the Lady Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State University at the par 72, 6,262-yard Auld Course. Yesterday's first round was played in the rain and the second round was suspended before completion due to darkness. The golfers came back this morning to finish the second round, but the scheduled third round was cancelled due to rain and poor course conditions.
Illinois finished in 12th place in the abbreviated 36-hole tournament with a score of 622, carding rounds of 315 and 307. Baylor won the 15-team event with a score of 590, becoming the only team to shoot below 600.
True freshman Kristine Cook continued to make her presence felt for the Illini, leading the Orange and Blue by tying for seventh place with a 3-over par total score of 147. Cook shot a 76 in round one and a collegiate career-low score of 1-under 71 in round two. Along with being her personal low round, Cook's 71 is also the lowest round by a UI golfer this fall. This marks the first career Top-10 finish for Cook, who tied for seventh out of 83 golfers in the tournament field.
Junior Megan Godfrey also finished in the top 30, carding a pair of rounds in the 70s. Godfrey tied for 28th place at 154, carding rounds of 76 and 78.
Illinois wraps up the 2004 fall season Nov. 1-2 at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C.
