CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Luther Head hit five 3-pointers and scored 18 points
and Deron Williams scored 15 points and had five assists to lead Illinois to a
67-52 win over Michigan Saturday.
Head hit two of the 3-pointers during a 13-3 second-half run that turned a
three-point game into a double-digit Illini lead with 12:21 to go.
Six minutes later, Williams keyed a 5-point burst that broke a 4-0 Michigan
run, hitting a three and then flipping a nice pass to Roger Powell for a layup
on the next possession to put Illinois up 55-44. The Wolverines couldn't get
within double digits again.
The Wolverines hit only one of five shots from the field in the last six
minutes of the game as Illinois outscored them 14-8 and held Michigan to a
season-low scoring total. Michigan shot only 35 percent from the field and was
only 3 of 18 from behind the 3-point line.
Williams also had five rebounds and Dee Brown scored 13 points for Illinois
(13-5, 4-3 Big Ten).
Bernard Robinson Jr. led Michigan with 14 points and Lester Abram scored 12
for Michigan (12-6, 3-4), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped.
Illinois ran into foul trouble early in the second half as big men James
Augustine and Nick Smith each picked up their fourth foul in the first 5:05.
But 6-10 reserve Jack Ingram gave coach Bruce Weber 12 minutes of solid play
and Michigan was unable to take advantage inside.
Illinois scored the first five points of the game, but Michigan came back
with five straight of its own to tie. Head's 3-pointer put the Illini up 8-5
and they held the lead for the rest of the half, but never by more than 7
points.
The Illini hit five 3-pointers in the half, while Michigan missed all six of
its shots behind the arc. The Wolverines made one of those up with three more
free throws than Illinois, which led 31-25 at the break.
