Columbus, Ohio - The Fighting Illini women's golf team traveled to Columbus, Ohio this weekend to compete at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate. The Illini shot an opening round score of 320 to put them in a tie for 12th place, while Michelle Carroll is in a tie for 20th place individually to lead the Illini. Play was suspended midway through round two due to darkness. The Lady Northern Intercollegiate is hosted by Ohio State at the par 72, 6,037-yard Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course, which is also the site of the 2004 Big Ten Championships. The very competitive Lady Northern Intercollegiate field includes all eleven Big Ten teams.
Senior Michelle Carroll fired the low round of the day for the Illini, shooting an opening round 76 to put her in a tie for 20th place, and was currently 6-over par in the second round before play was suspended. Senior Marla Cox opened with an 80 to put her in a tie for 46th place after round one, but is only 2-over par after nine holes in second round play. The overall leader is Janice Olivencia of the University of Texas, who fired a 2-under par 70 in the opening round.
Illinois shot a 320 in the opening round to put them in a tie for 12th place. Ohio State shot a 3-over par 291 to put them in first place after the first round.
The Lady Northern Intercollegiate will resume tomorrow morning with second round play at 8:30 a.m. The third and final round will begin immediately following the conclusion of round two.
