No. 7 Men's Gymnastics Finishes Second at Southwest Cup

Tempe, Ariz. - The seventh-ranked Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team finished off its west coast road trip with a second place finish at the Southwest Cup. No. 2 Penn State won the meet with a score of 219.200 and was followed by Illinois (214.075), No. 10 Temple (209.725) and club teams Arizona State (198.500) and Cal-Santa Barbara (196.550). Illinois' score was its highest away score of the season, which will help boost their two-score average.

The Illini posted a season high score of 35.700 on the parallel bars and were led by freshman Adam Pummer, who tied for first on the event with a career high score of 9.250. Erik Garnett took third on the p-bars with a career best 9.100, Scott Wetterling finished sixth with an 8.700, and Bob Spelic's 8.650 was good enough for second place.

Pummer had a great day in the all-around. He posted a career high score of 53.600 to finish second behind Penn State's Kevin Donohue, who won with a score of 53.950. In addition to winning the p-bars, Pummer also finished tied for second on vault (9.400), sixth on high bar (9.200) and seventh on the floor exercise (8.850). Wetterling finished fifth in the all-around with a score of 51.950. His best event was the high bar, where he finished tied for fourth with a season high score of 9.300.

Freshman Justin Spring had another good day for the Orange and Blue. He scored a 9.000 to finish third on the floor and a 9.250 to take sixth place on vault. On the pommel horse, three Illini cracked the top six finishers. Junior Bob Rogers led the way by scoring 9.175 to take second place and was followed by Peter Shostchuk, who scored 9.150 to tie for fourth, and Ben Newman, who posted an 8.800 to take sixth place.

The Illini return to the friendly confines of Huff Hall for a match-up with No. 1 Oklahoma next Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m. They will follow that up with an off week before heading to Columbus, Ohio for the 2003 Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Championships.
