Top-Ranked Oklahoma Too Much For No. 5 Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The fifth-ranked Fighting Illini posted their second highest score of the season Saturday night at Huff Hall, but fell to top-ranked Oklahoma, 219.600-214.850. The Illini had season best performances on the high bar (36.675) and floor exercise (35.950) and won the vault vs. the Sooners. Their score of 35.100 on the parallel bars was their second best effort on the season.

Freshman Adam Pummer had an outstanding meet, winning two events and the all-around. The Allentown, Pa. native posted a career high score of 9.300 to win the floor and also won the vault with a 9.400. Pummer also performed well on the high bar (career high 9.325, 3rd place) and parallel bars (9.000, 3rd place). His all-around score of 54.575 shattered his previous career high of 53.600. Oklahoma's Heath Mueller placed second to Pummer in the all-around with a score of 53.900, while Illinois' Scott Wetterling was third with a season best score of 52.650. Wetterling's best event was the high bar, where he scored a 9.450 to place second.

Junior Bob Rogers performed well for the Illini on the pommel horse; he took second place with a score of 9.400. Sophomore All-American Peter Shostchuk finished fourth on the parallel bars with an 8.800, while junior Nick Hand was the squad's top performer on rings with a career high score of 8.875. Hand also set a career high of 9.000 on the floor exercise to finish fourth.

Saturday's meet was the final home meet for Illinois seniors Mike Filla and Bob Spelic. Spelic performed well in his final stint at Huff Hall, scoring a season best 9.200 on vault to take second and tying a season best on rings with an 8.850.

The Illini have a week off before heading to Columbus, Ohio for the 2003 Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Championships on March 28-29. Following that, they will have another week off before traveling to Philadelphia, Pa. for the NCAA Championships April 11-13.
