Illini Put Spring Practice Number Eight In The Books

April 8, 2002

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - After taking Sunday off, the Big Ten Champion Fighting Illini returned to practice this afternoon with a full contact, two-hour practice in the Irwin Indoor Practice Facility. The practice featured both 7-on-7 passing drills and a full contact scrimmage where Illinois' talented corp of receivers were able to put their skills on display.

Illinois boasts one of the country's top groups of receivers, as it returns nearly every pass catcher from a year ago minus tight end Brian Hodges. Starters Brandon Lloyd and Walter Young return in addition to reserves Greg Lewis, Aaron Moorehead and Eric McGoey. The Illini will also enjoy the services of Kendrick Jones, Ade Adeyemo and Anthony McClellan, who will see increased rolls this season.

"I think we have a good group of receivers on this team and it has turned into a very competitive position," head coach Ron Turner said. "Throughout the spring they have been catching the ball well and are showing improved speed."

One of those receivers who continues to improve is Walter Young. After a national breakout game in the Nokia Sugar Bowl (6 catches for 178 yards), Young has continued to develop into the position and gives the Illini a size advantage on every down.

"Walter is starting to play like a wide receiver rather then a quarterback," Turner said. "He's playing fast and catching the ball well. He's someone who just continues to get better for this team."

UPCOMING PRACTICE SCHEDULE

The Fighting Illini will take Tuesday off from practice, but the defending Big Ten Champion Illini return to practice on Wednesday April 10th and Thursday April 11th, with both practices starting at 3:30 p.m.
