RESULTS CAN BE FOUND BELOW THE STORY
Illinois finished in fifth place, its best finish in seven years (since the 1995 Championship), at the Women's Big Ten Championship, held at the par 72, 6,215-yard Stone Creek Golf Club. Illinois shot rounds of 307, 299, 332 and 323 to finish fifth with a final team score of 1261.
All players endured the wet conditions and wind gusts of 40+ miles per hour during the final 27 holes of play today. A shotgun start at 8 a.m. this morning concluded the suspended nine holes from yesterday's third round, and the final 18 holes were played immediately after round three. The Buckeyes of Ohio State shot a final-round score of 317 to finish the tournament with a score of 1220 to edge out Purdue by ten strokes and claim the Big Ten Title. Purdue finished second with a score of 1230, while Michigan took third with a final score of 1236. Individually, Ohio State's Mollie Fankhauser repeated as medalist of the Big Ten Championship, finishing 16-over par with a 304. Fankhauser won by one stroke over a trio of golfers that tied for second in Wisconsin's Malinda Johnson, Michigan's Le Anna Wicks, and Purdue's Caroline Laurens, who all shot 305.
"I'm elated and so happy for our team," Head Coach Paula Smith said of the Illini's upper-division conference finish. "Our team has worked extremely hard and is very deserving. The weather conditions were difficult, but they were the same for everybody. It took a lot of concentration and focus by the players to play well."
Headlining Illinois' charge to fifth place was junior Laurin Kanda. Kanda shot a final round 79 in the harsh conditions to earn a 20th place finish at the Championship. Kanda shot 75, 76, and 85 in the previous three rounds to give her a Big Ten Championship score of 315, 27-strokes above par.
"Placing fifth is a huge accomplishment for our program, especially when you consider the four teams that finished ahead of us are all ranked in the top 25 in the country," Kanda said. "We're thrilled with how we played this weekend, it took a total team effort."
Sophomore Michelle Carroll finished in a tie for 28th place. Carroll carded rounds of 76, 82, 83 and 81, giving her a four-round total score of 322. Junior Renata Young fired a 324 for the tournament, good for a tie for 34th place overall.
The strong showing by the Illini will enhance the program's quest to earn a bid to NCAA Regionals. The regional selections will be announced on Monday afternoon.
