RESULTS CAN BE FOUND BELOW THE STORY
Illinois sits in a tie for sixth place following the first two rounds of play at the Big Ten Women's Golf Championship. Illinois shot an opening round 307 and followed that up with a second-round score of 299, the fourth-lowest round in school history. Illinois' 36-hole total of 606 places them tied with Northwestern for sixth in the eleven-team field. The Big Ten Championship is being held at the par 72, 6,215-yard Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Illinois.
The Buckeyes of Ohio State carded rounds of 297 and 289 giving them a score of 586 and first place halfway through the tournament. Buckeye junior Mollie Fankhauser and freshman Lindsay Knowlton are tied for the individual lead at -1 (143). Fankhauser tied the Stone Creek Course record with her four-under par 68 in the afternoon round.
Highlighting Illinois' performance today were juniors Stephanie Cheney and Laurin Kanda. Kanda and Cheney both sit in a tie for 15th with two-round scores of 151. Cheney had scores of 78 in the first round and came back with a one-over par 73, her lowest round of the season, to close out the day.
"I wasn't hitting the ball real well today so I just tried to stay mentally strong," said Cheney. "I just tried to think of it today on a shot to shot basis."
Kanda shot rounds of 75 and 76 to also give her a total of 151 after two rounds of play.
Sophomore Marla Cox has put herself in a tie for 34th place. Cox shot an 82 in round one and shaved nine strokes off with a second round score of one-over par 73. Freshman Michelle Carroll fired rounds of 76 and 82 for a two round total of 158.
Head Coach Paula Smith was happy with the team's performance in the first two rounds.
"I'm really proud of the team," said Smith. "Each person was able to play a key part in our overall team score today. I feel pretty good about the scores today because the course is playing much longer today than it did in the fall."
The third round of the Women's Big Ten Championship begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
