Sophomore Tiffany Eklov, who was ranked this week for the first time in her collegiate tennis career (at 109), picked up a singles win at Indiana. It wasn't enough for Illinois, however, as the Hoosiers prevailed Sunday, 4-3.

Illinois Drops 4-3 Match At Indiana

March 10, 2002

The Fighting Illini women's tennis team fell to .500 in both Big Ten and overall dual match play this season following a 4-3 loss at Indiana today.

Illinois continued to struggle in doubles play. Indiana took the doubles point, it was the fourth time in four Big Ten matches that the Orange and Blue failed to win the opening point. Sophomores Eva Choe and Jennifer McGaffigan did manage an 8-4 victory at No. 2 over the Hoosiers' Amanda Field and Inga Radel.

The Fighting Illini were able to salvage a split in singles play, but it wasn't good enough to secure the team victory. Tiffany Eklov, Eldina Fazlic and Michelle Webb won at Nos. 3, 5 and 6, respectively. The UI singles lineup was a bit jumbled today, because the team was without the services of freshman Cynthya Goulet. After retiring from her singles match in the loss at Purdue yesterday, Coach Sujay Lama played her only in doubles today. So Choe moved up a spot to Goulet's No. 2 position, Eklov moved to No. 3, Kate Boomershine jumped from No. 5 to No. 4, Fazlic moved from No. 6 to No. 5, and Webb competed at No. 6.

"We did compete much better than we did yesterday," said Lama. "But once again, we dug ourselves a big hole by losing the doubles point. We've lost the doubles point in every Big Ten match so far, and it's catching up to us. We can't afford to give up that early momentum all of the time. Doubles definitely sets the tone for a match.

"We will focus even more this week on our doubles play. We'll definitely need to be at our best at Northwestern next weekend," said Lama.

Illinois will take a 7-7 overall record and a 2-2 Big Ten mark into Saturday's match with the league-leading Wildcats in Evanston.
