The Illinois men's track and field team is in fifth place after the first day of competition at the USTCA Collegiate Sykes/Sabok Challenge Cup hosted by Penn State at the Ashenfelter Indoor Track in State College, Pa.
The USTCA Challenge is a two-day meet that had the 60m dash, 60m hurdles, 5,000m run, distance medley relay, long jump and weight throw competitions completed today. The rest of the event will get underway Saturday morning.
Illinois is in fifth place with 24 points behind leader and Big-Ten rival Penn State who has 38 team points.
Anthony Moorman and Brandon Lloyd each competed well in their events earning third-place finishes to get the Illini on the scoreboard. Moorman sped to a time of 6.81 in the finals of the 60m dash to earn the third-place finish. That time by the Streamwood, Ill., native is the second fastest of his career in the event.
Lloyd also ran to third place, but this was in the 60m hurdles. In just his second meet of the season, Lloyd sprinted to a time of 8.01 seconds, the fastest time of his young career and the third fastest time in school history.
John Kronforst was the final Illinois individual to score on Friday. Kronforst finished fifth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:28.62. That time moves the junior into eighth on the all-time 5,000m performance list at Illinois.
The Fighting Illini will wrap up competition at the USTCA Challenge on Saturday.
