CHICAGO -- The Fighting Illini women's gymnastics team recorded a season-best 48.425 on the uneven bars en route to accumulating the best team total of the year, but it was not quite enough as Illinois-Chicago edged Illinois, 193.950-193.700. The Illini now stand at 3-6 on the year, 1-2 in the Big Ten.
Freshman Ashley Williams continued to perform well scoring a 9.850 to take the individual title on the uneven bars. She also tied with freshman teammate Lauren Newcomb and UIC's Erica Varner for the highest vault score as each of them received a 9.775. The duo also tied with a pair of Flames for third on the floor exercise as all four gymnasts recorded a score of 9.775. Williams scored a 9.750 to take sixth on the balance beam. Added together, Williams' four performances totaled a 39.150, which was enough for first place and was the top individual all-around score for the Illini this season.
Some Juniors also turned in strong performances.Jana Gallagher tied for first on the balance beam with a 9.850. She also scored a 9.725 to tie for fourth on the uneven bars en route finishing second in the all-around with a 38.750. Amanda Kaufman scored a career-best 9.825 to take third on the balance beam.
The Illini remain on the road as they head to Ohio State on Friday night.
